Carlisle Indian School Students Assembled c1885

Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center

Part of the government’s program for assimilating Native American youth into the dominant white culture of the era, the Carlisle Indian School was the first federally-managed off-reservation boarding school in the United States, operating from 1879 to 1918.

This online collection of more than 300,000 pages of original documents, photographs, publications, and other school records sheds light on this troubling and often overlooked aspect of American history.
